Heel spur
Heel spur
Main symptoms:
Morning pain, which subsides during the day and intensifies in the evening.
As the process progresses - constant pain. In case of progression of the process - constant pain.
Sharp pains with a "thorn/nail/needle" and/or "burning" sensation.
Shifting of pain localization from the foot to the heel area.
Intensification of pain during physical exertion.
Change in gait.
Stiffness when touching the heel area.
Limited mobility of the foot.
It is important to remember that patients with heel spurs do not always have pain symptoms, and the cause of pain may not be the spur itself, but systematic microtraumas of the heel bone and foot.
Diagnosis of heel spurs
It is important to conduct a differential diagnosis with diseases with similar symptom complexes (see Bechterew's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Reiter's symptom, fractures and injuries). During the examination, there should be no pathological changes, such as redness, cracks and calluses in the area of the foot.
When palpated, pain is localized in the area of attachment of the plantar fascia of the foot, with a characteristic increase in pain when the big toe is straightened. Sometimes only examination and palpation are not enough, the diagnosis must be confirmed by additional diagnostic methods.
1. X-ray
2. CT (Computed Tomography) or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
3. Ultrasound (ultrasound)
