Knee

Gonarthrosis

Gonarthrosis

Symptoms

Severe pain in the knee during movement, lifting weights

Reduced motor activity of the joint

Knee creaking and muscle tension

Swelling around the joint

Slight limping when walking

Features

8-20% of the adult population of the country suffer from gonarthrosis. With age, especially in women, the risk of disability due to gonarthrosis increases.

Primary gonarthrosis occurs without any obvious reasons. As a rule, 2 knee joints are affected at once in elderly patients.

Secondary arthrosis of the knee joint is always unilateral. It occurs as a result of heavy physical work or sports, injuries (intra-articular fractures, damage to cartilage, ligaments of the joints), knee joint surgeries, inflammatory processes/tumors of the joints.

In the initial stage of the disease, osteophytes are not observed on the bone surfaces.

Complete destruction of cartilage and the formation of osteophytes on the bone surfaces are observed in the 3rd-4th stages of the disease. And characteristic pains appear already in the 2nd stage. At this stage, the patient has time to consult a doctor and undergo treatment to prevent disability.

What symptoms should you beware of

knee pain when squatting, climbing/descending stairs

crunching in the knees

synovitis (fluid accumulates in the joint, the joint expands and swells)

individual parts of the joints are warm to the touch

change in the shape of the leg in the knee area.
